Question 52
TOPIK Writing Question 52: Tips and Strategies
Writing Prompt
TOPIK Writing Question 52 in the TOPIK II exam is another short-answer task in the Writing section. Like Question 51, you are given a short passage with a blank and need to complete it appropriately.
The key difference is that Question 52 often requires you to connect several pieces of information in the passage. You need to understand not just what the text says, but what the missing sentence needs to communicate. Here are some strategies that can help you solve Question 52 more confidently.
1. Understand the Whole Situation
Before thinking about the blank, read the entire passage. Ask yourself: What is happening here? Try to identify:
– the main topic
– the problem or situation
– the reason
– the result
– what the writer wants to explain
An example:
최근에는 혼자 사는 사람들이 늘면서 소형 가전제품의 판매량도 증가하고 있다. 1인 가구는 큰 제품보다 공간을 많이 차지하지 않는 제품을 선호하는 경우가 많다. 따라서 가전업체들은 ________.
The first two sentences give us the situation:
1인 가구 증가 → 소형 가전 수요 증가
The final sentence tells us that the companies are responding to this trend. A natural answer could be:
1인 가구를 위한 소형 제품을 개발하고 있다.
The answer comes directly from understanding the relationship between the information in the passage.
2. Pay Attention to the Sentence Before and After
The words surrounding the blank are often your biggest clues. Look for connecting expressions such as:
따라서 / 그러므로 → result or conclusion
하지만 / 그러나 → contrast
때문에 / -기 때문이다 → reason
특히 → emphasis
반면에 → contrast
이러한 이유로 → result or conclusion
For example:
> 최근 대중교통 이용자가 증가하고 있다. 대중교통은 자동차보다 교통비를 절약할 수 있다는 장점이 있다. **이러한 이유로** ________.
The phrase 이러한 이유로 tells you that the blank should describe a result. For example:
대중교통을 이용하는 사람들이 계속해서 늘고 있다.
The exact wording can vary, but the logical connection needs to be clear.
3. Look for Cause and Effect
Cause-and-effect relationships are particularly important in TOPIK Writing. A passage may give you:
Cause → ________ → Result
or:
Problem → ________ → Solution
or:
Situation → ________ → Consequence
Try to identify which part is missing. For example:
최근 기후 변화로 인해 여름철 기온이 크게 상승하고 있다. 이에 따라 냉방 기기의 사용량도 증가하고 있으며, ________.
The passage gives us:
기온 상승 → 냉방 기기 사용 증가 → ?
The missing information could describe a consequence:
전력 소비량이 크게 늘어날 것으로 예상된다.
When you recognize the relationship, it becomes much easier to predict what belongs in the blank.
4. Use the Vocabulary Already in the Passage
You don’t need to search for completely new vocabulary. TOPIK questions often give you useful words and concepts that can be reused in your answer. For example, if the passage discusses:
환경 오염
useful expressions might include:
환경 오염을 줄이다
환경을 보호하다
오염 물질을 줄이다
If it discusses:
경제
you might use:
경제 성장을 촉진하다
소비를 활성화하다
경제에 영향을 미치다
If it discusses:
건강
you might use:
건강을 유지하다
건강에 해를 끼치다
건강에 도움이 되다
This is why learning words together with common collocations is so useful for TOPIK Writing.
5. Don’t Add Unnecessary Information
Your answer should stay connected to the passage. Imagine the passage is about:
온라인 수업의 advantages and disadvantages
and the blank requires a disadvantage. Don’t suddenly introduce a completely unrelated topic such as employment or environmental policy. Stay focused on the information already provided. A useful question to ask is:
Could this sentence naturally have been part of the original passage?
If yes, you’re probably on the right track.
6. Keep Your Korean Natural and Simple
You don’t need extremely advanced grammar to answer Question 52 well. For example:
비용을 줄일 수 있다는 장점이 있다.
is perfectly useful Korean. You don’t need to write an unnecessarily complicated sentence just to demonstrate your vocabulary. Focus on correct grammar, appropriate meaning, and natural expression, rather than trying to make your answer as long as possible.
A Simple Question 52 Strategy
When you see Question 52 in the exam, use these steps:
1. Read the whole passage: Understand the situation before writing.
2. Identify the key information: What are the important facts, problems, or changes?
3. Look at the connecting words: Words such as 하지만, 따라서, and 이러한 이유로 tell you how the missing sentence should connect to the rest of the passage.
4. Identify the relationship: Is it:
cause → result?
problem → solution?
advantage → disadvantage?
situation → consequence?
5. Write a natural sentence: Use familiar vocabulary and useful collocations.
6. Read the whole passage again: Make sure your answer fits naturally.
Common Mistakes
Writing a grammatically correct but unrelated sentence: Always consider the logic of the passage, not just grammar.
Ignoring connecting expressions: A word like 하지만 or 따라서 can completely change what kind of answer you need.
Using unnecessarily difficult vocabulary: Don’t risk mistakes just to sound advanced.
Writing too much: Question 52 is still a short-answer task. Focus on giving the information the passage needs.
Memorizing model answers: Model answers are useful, but understanding why they work is more valuable.
How to Practice Question 52
When you practice, try covering the answer and solving the question yourself. Then check:
What clue did I use?
Was it:
– the vocabulary?
– the grammar?
– a connecting expression?
– a cause-and-effect relationship?
– a problem and solution?
If you can explain why an answer fits, you’re improving the skill that actually matters on test day.
Final Question 52 Checklist
Before moving on, ask yourself:
☐ Did I understand the whole passage?
☐ Did I identify the key information?
☐ Did I notice the connecting expressions?
☐ Does my answer match the logical relationship?
☐ Is my Korean grammatically correct?
☐ Does it sound natural?
If all six are yes, move on.
