Question 51

TOPIK Writing Question 51: Tips and Strategies

Writing Prompt

TOPIK Writing Question 51 of the TOPIK II exam is the shortest tasks in the entire writing section, but it can still be surprisingly difficult. The good news: Question 51 follows a fairly clear pattern.

You are given a short text with a blank, and you need to complete it with an appropriate expression or sentence. The key is not to write something complicated. Instead, you need to understand the context and identify exactly what information is missing.

Here are some simple strategies that can help:

1. Read Before You Write

Don’t immediately focus on the blank. First, read the entire text and ask yourself: What is this passage about?

Then look at the sentences immediately before and after the blank.

For example:

최근에는 건강에 대한 관심이 높아지면서 운동을 하는 사람들이 많아졌다. 특히 시간과 장소에 관계없이 할 수 있는 운동이 인기를 끌고 있다. 바쁜 직장인들도 쉽게 운동할 수 있기 때문이다.

The final sentence gives you an important clue:

바쁜 직장인들도 쉽게 운동할 수 있기 때문이다.

The missing part should explain why this type of exercise is popular or suitable. You don’t need to invent a completely new idea. The answer should connect the information that is already there.

2. Look for the Logical Connection

One of the most important skills for Question 51 is recognizing the relationship between sentences.

Look for words such as:

하지만 / 그러나 → contrast
따라서 / 그러므로 → result or conclusion
특히 → emphasis
즉 → explanation or clarification
때문에 / -기 때문이다 → reason
반면에 → contrast

These expressions are clues about what the missing sentence needs to do. For example:

온라인 쇼핑은 시간과 장소에 관계없이 이용할 수 있어 편리하다. 하지만 ________

Because of 하지만, you should expect a contrasting idea:

직접 상품을 확인하기 어렵다는 단점이 있다.

The sentence doesn’t need to be complicated. It simply needs to complete the logic.

3. Use the Vocabulary in the Passage

TOPIK often gives you the vocabulary you need. If the passage is about environmental problems, you might see expressions such as:

환경을 보호하다
오염을 줄이다
일회용품 사용을 줄이다

If it is about health:

건강을 유지하다
운동을 하다
건강에 해를 끼치다

If it is about the economy:

경제 성장을 촉진하다
비용을 줄이다
소비가 증가하다

Learning collocations is particularly useful for Question 51 because it allows you to produce natural Korean quickly. Instead of memorizing:

촉진하다 = to promote

learn:

경제 성장을 촉진하다

This is much easier to use when you’re under exam pressure. You will find some collocations in the vocab trainer of the TOPIK Writing Lab.

4. Keep Your Answer Simple

Don’t try to impress the examiner with complicated grammar. A short, natural sentence is often the safest choice. For example:

규칙적으로 운동해야 한다.

There is no need to turn this into a complicated sentence if the simple version expresses the required meaning. For Question 51, think:

Context → Logic → Natural Korean

rather than:

Difficult vocabulary → Long sentence → Complicated grammar

5. Check Your Answer in Context

Once you’ve written your answer, read the entire passage again with your answer inserted. Ask yourself three questions:

Does it make sense? Does your answer actually fit the topic?

Is the grammar correct? Does your sentence connect naturally to the surrounding grammar?

Does it sound like Korean? Even if a sentence is grammatically possible, it may not be the most natural expression.

If the paragraph flows naturally with your answer, you’re probably on the right track.

A Simple Question 51 Strategy

When you see Question 51 in the exam, remember these five steps:

1. Read the whole passage.
2. Identify the topic.
3. Look for clues around the blank.
4. Decide what information is missing.
5. Write the simplest natural answer.

Don’t spend too much time trying to create a perfect sentence. Question 51 is about understanding the context and completing it appropriately.

The Best Way to Practice Question 51

When practicing, don’t just check whether your answer matches the model answer. Instead, ask: Why is this the right answer?

Look for the clue that helped you. Was it:
– a connecting word?
– a repeated vocabulary item?
– a grammatical structure?
– a contrast?
– a reason or result?

Once you start recognizing these patterns, Question 51 becomes much more predictable. Practice the logic, learn useful collocations, and keep your answers simple. That’s the key to mastering TOPIK Writing Question 51.
