TOPIK Writing Question 53: Tips and Strategies

Question 53 is worth 30 points, and it’s testing whether you can describe data accurately, objectively,
and completely within 200–300 characters. Students who are strong writers often lose points here anyway, simply because Q53 has its own rules that don’t apply anywhere else on the exam.

Know What Q53 Actually Wants

Q53 gives you a chart, graph, or survey result and asks you to describe it — nothing more. That means:

– No opinions. Don’t say what you think about the trend.
– No predictions, unless the material itself gives you future/projected
data to describe.
– No unsupported causes. Only explain why something happened if that
reason was explicitly part of the given material. Otherwise you’re speculating, not describing.

This is the single most common way strong writers lose points on Q53: they
default to Q54 habits (argue, interpret, predict) on a question that’s asking
for the opposite skill.

Match Your Opening to the Data Type

Q53 prompts generally come in a few recognizable shapes, and each has a
natural opening formula:

Change over time (line graph / trend data):

[주제]의 변화를 살펴보면 다음과 같다.
Looking at the change in [topic], it is as follows.

Survey results:

[기관]에서 [주제]에 대해 조사한 결과, ...
According to a survey conducted by [organization] on [topic], ...

General/comparison data:

위 자료는 [주제]를 나타낸 것이다.
The above data shows [topic].

Picking the formula that actually matches your chart type is a small thing that signals you
understand the data, not just the sentence pattern.

Structure: Describe, Compare, Summarize

A reliable shape for most Q53 answers:

1. Opening — state what the data is about, matched to its type (above)
2. Body — walk through the data in order (chronological for trends, category-by-category for comparisons), citing specific figures
3. Closing — a purely descriptive summary: total change, biggest
difference, or overall pattern — not an opinion or a forecast

Use Safe, Standard Phrases

A few patterns do a lot of work in Q53 specifically:

– -것으로 나타났다 — “it was shown/found that…” (reporting a result)
– -것을 알 수 있다 — “it can be seen that…” (stating an observed
pattern — safer than -것으로 보인다, which leans toward inference)
– -았/었음을 알 수 있다 — reporting a completed fact from the data; see our post on nominalization with [-ㅁ/음] for the full grammar behind this — it’s one of the most useful pattern for this question specifically
– -는 반면에 — for comparison charts with two contrasting groups; covered
in our post on [-는 반면에]. Perhaps of note: 반면 can also serve as a sentence opener: 60대 승객 수는 감소하였다. 반면, 20대 승객 수는 큰 폭으로 증가하였다.

Watch Your Character Count

200–300 characters, same 원고지-style counting as Q54 (every syllable, space,
and punctuation mark counts). Q53’s tight limit means every sentence needs
to earn its place. If you’re going over 300, look for a sentence that’s
interpreting rather than describing, since that’s usually the one that can go.

Bonus: Since you are limited to 300 characters and will mostly use standard sentence patterns, finish your Q53 within 15 minutes to save time for you Q54 essay.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

– Slipping into opinion or prediction — by far the most common issue;
reread your closing sentence specifically and ask whether it’s describing
the data or interpreting it.
– Skipping part of the data. If the chart has three categories or two
time periods, all of them need to appear — don’t just describe the most
interesting one.
– Speaking register (-습니다) instead of essay register (-다). This is written, objective Korean, not spoken Korean.
– Vague quantities instead of specific figures. “많이 증가했다” (increased
a lot) is weaker than citing the actual numbers from the chart.

Practice With Real Data

The fastest way to internalize the difference between describing and
interpreting is to write a Q53 answer, then go back and flag every sentence
that isn’t strictly reporting what’s on the chart. The TOPIK Writing Lab features a growing collection of TOPIK II Question 53 writing prompts and model answers to help you achieve your best results.
